Royal Navy
The senior of the 3 Armed Forces, the Royal Navy has a long and proud history with the origins of its current structures dating back nearly 500 years, its unique combination of land, air and sea capabilities are merged into a single fighting force which is recognised and respected worldwide. Every day of the year, the ships, aircraft and submarines of the Royal Navy are hard at work defending the UK's interests and acting as a force for good, supported in specialist amphibious assaults by the Royal Marines.
HMS Illustrious
The current HMS Illustrious was laid down in Swan Hunters Ship Builders Yard on the Tyne on 7th October 1976. She has participated in most major UK and NATO campaigns over the last 15 years; including the First Gulf War, the Sierra Leone Evacuations and the war in Afghanistan in 2001. After this period of hectic activity, in October 2002, HMS Illustrious undertook a 104 week refit in Rosyth Dockyard Scotland at a total cost of £118 million. The Ship is due to remain in service until 2016, when she will be replaced by the aircraft carriers Queen Elizabeth II and Prince of Wales.
