History:

The Ju 87 B-2 was introduced in 1939, and built at the Berlin-Tempelhof factory of the “Weser” Flugzeugbau, the Berta was supplied to the Stukagruppen from July 1940 in preparation for Adlerangriff playing an active role in the Battle of Britain. Before the attack on Britain began, a modified version, the Ju 87R, had reached some units. This was basically similar to the Ju 87B, but incorporated additional fuel tanks in the outer wing panels, each carrying 33 Imperial gallons, while provision was made for the fitting of 66 Imperial gallon under-wing tanks to the outer bomb shackles, which were situated beneath the wings. Indeed, the designation R indicated “Reichweite” (Range).

Specification for Ju 87B:- 1,200h.p. Junkers Jumo 211 Da in-line. 2 x 7.9mm MG17 forward firing machine guns mounted in the wings. One 7.9mm MG17 hand operated by the rear observer. Either 1,102lb bomb beneath the fuselage, or one 551lb bomb in this position and four 110lb bombs beneath the wings.

J9+BL is III.Stukageschwader I from 6 July 1940, 9 Stafel, aircraft B (in yellow). St. Pierre sur Dives then Kitzingen, Bavaria, until October. Also stated as Oblt. Otto Blumers of 9 Stafel, Stukageschwader I, based at Angers, France, summer (July – September) 1940 and St. Omer, France, (St. Pol, September – November) November 1940. Stated as an R (long range with supplementary tanks). The use of L as the designation of 9 Stafel seems peculiar to III.Stukageschwader I as other units use L for 3 Stafel. J9+BL is Ju 87B, 9/St G 1, Luftflotte 2. Pas-de-Calais. Shot down into the English Channel off Dover on 14 November 1940. W.Nr. 5641.

The instructions are two colour (like the instructions issued currently), though the painting guide is in monochrome.

I am also watching Junkers Ju87 THE INFAMOUS STUKA DIVE-BOMBER THE FLYING SCOURGE OF EUROPE - a DVD I bought some years back.

I have a spare fuel tank from the 1/24 Fw 190, if I can get another I'll build the as an R (long range) variant.

Engine looking great, if that's only supplied kit parts Airfix sure did a great job & your paint work really sets it off nicely. That gunner's seat sure looks spartan, must have been fun diving with no back-rest, hope there's something for the gunner to hold onto, & how did the gunner strap themselves in. Again nice painting of the crew.

Looking forewards to seeing more.

Remember we do this for fun    John the Pom.

All straight from the box John, no added parts at all.

I was thinking that myself, the gunner hasn't got much in the way of creature comforts, I've seen more comfortable looking camping chairs!

The fuselage is closed up

The Jumo appears to be OK

One half of the fuselage was a little short-shot, no spare bits of plastic floating about in the box.

I cut some plastic card to bridge the gap

I'll probably use Milliput to fill and shape

  • 2 weeks later...

Progress is slow and I thought it might be best to paint the undersurfaces before fitting the bomb-rack   So I filled, sanded and primed.

Then pre-shaded.
