Airfix 1:48 Martin B-57B Canberra (A10104)

52-1574, 71st Bomb Squadron, 38th Bomber Wing, Leon, France, 1957.

I like these 1:48 Canberra and have another 5 to buildof the various marks, unfortunately the decals are not up to Airfix's current excellent standards so this was completed with aftermarket replacements. The plane is brush painted using several thinned coats of Hu85 and Humbrol Clear.

I looked at the photos first and I thought: What a great finish. And then I read 'brush painted'. Chapeau! If you are going to show us some more of your exceptionel models, would you take the photos outside in the daylight please? These photos are much better than those of the Tomcat, also a wonderful model. One can see more of the details. When I paint small parts in several thin coats, it often happens, that the thinner of the last coat dissolves the dry paint of the former coats and I have parts of it in the brush. What am I doing wrong?

English winters aren't too conducive to outside photography :-). Finished the Tomeat a few years ago when the weather wasn't too good but I agree and when I can now I take photo's outside.

I had had the same problem then I discovered Humbrol clear, I brush a coat on after the paint has dried and before applying subsequent coats, it acts as a barrier to the thinners reactivating the earlier coats. With black I've started to use thinned Satin Black as it isn't as thick as gloss or Matt and then gloss it by several coats of clear or Matt it with thinned Matt coat. Used to use enamel Matt varnish but the last few tins have remained cloudy be spite of copious amounts of stirring and dried with a white finish.

What type of clear do you use between coats (matt, satin or gloss)? I am trying to work out how to get a good gloss finish with acrylic and you have clearly cracked it. I am concerned that a gloss clear coat will cause the next paint coat to form drops rather than a smooth coat.

Thanks

Paul

Sorry for the delay in replying Paul.

I tend to use Humbrol Clear now for varnishing, again applied with a decent sized flat brush. Still awaiting the Mat and Satin finishes in Clear so at the moment it's only gloss. I normally use enamels but use acrylics more frequently as I find the new formula enamels quite thick and opaque for brush painting.

That said, from my experience the issue you are worried about has never happened to me. I sometimes use clear between coats to protect paint already applied and to level it out helping to prevent subsequent coats "gripping".

My advice would be to get a cheap or unwanted kit and practice. ( leaving a kit in raw Detol or Breach for a few hour will remove paint and you can wash it and start again until you are happy with your technique)

Enjoy your hobby.

Thanks for for the comments all.

John
