Jonathan Mock
This is one of the Airfix 1/72 resin buildings. The model was washed in water and household detergent and scrubed with an old brush to remove any mould-release agents, then left to dry, It was then given a couple of coats of Humbrol acrylic grey primer from a spray can which dries quickly to a tough, smooth finish. http://i719.photobucket.com/albums/ww195/jonathanmock/1_zpsptvdimyo.jpg
Jonathan Mock
A coat of 78 Brick Red acrylic is applied to the roof - the kit specifies 98 Chocolate, but any red/brown will do. The trick is to work the paint into the nooks and crevices then blend it downwards. This coat of fairly opaque so may not need a second coat. Some of the tiles can be picked out in slightly different shades.http://i719.photobucket.com/albums/ww195/jonathanmock/3_zpsnqda4wne.jpg
Jonathan Mock
The walls of the building can also be given a base coat of light grey acrylic. This may require a couple of coats to achieve opacity, so the first coat is applied thinly and evenly. The advantage of some acrylics (like Humbrol) over enamels is that because there is no solvent base, they can be over coated after shorter drying periods. A basic coat of 29 Dark Earth acrylic brings life to the brickwork, some bricks will be randomly picked out using 26 and 70 for variety.http://i719.photobucket.com/albums/ww195/jonathanmock/4_zpsqzljs8ik.jpg
Jonathan Mock
The walls are painted Humbrol 65, two coats are needed to build up a nice solid colour.http://i719.photobucket.com/albums/ww195/jonathanmock/5_zpstk2qwzr7.jpg
Jonathan Mock
The wooden floors are picked out in Humbrol 26 and can be similarly accented with some planks in a slightly different shade, as well as a gentle dry brush in a light colour and a darker wash to pick out the detail.http://i719.photobucket.com/albums/ww195/jonathanmock/6_zpscdwaqdfs.jpg
Jonathan Mock
Rearwards view of the building with the basic paintwork done. Within a diorama setting, debris and dust would be added to the interior as well as some decorating and furniture details.http://i719.photobucket.com/albums/ww195/jonathanmock/7_zpsmorfsjyl.jpg
Jonathan Mock
Time add some life to the outside with the lower cafe front and shutters painted in a deep blue using Humbrol 96 RAF Blue acrylic. Again, two coats may be needed to get a nice solid colour.http://i719.photobucket.com/albums/ww195/jonathanmock/8_zps472rwoej.jpg
Jonathan Mock
With the basic colours on, the building looks a bit bright and stark, almost toy-like. This is where the weathering part comes in, more so bearing in mind this building will have suffered heavy damage.http://i719.photobucket.com/albums/ww195/jonathanmock/9_zpswii38vyr.jpg
Jonathan Mock
Humbrol weathering powders were used extensively to create dust and weathered effects on this model. There they are being applied to the front of the cafe to create the effect of dust and dirt engrained into the paintwork. http://i719.photobucket.com/albums/ww195/jonathanmock/10_zpsjoqsb1g8.jpg
Jonathan Mock
Here more dust is being applied around the broken render work - some of the bricks have been picked out in varying colours. http://i719.photobucket.com/albums/ww195/jonathanmock/11_zpscusxspyg.jpg
Jonathan Mock
More weathering on the roof using darker colours and green to simulate the building up of moss and general grime. Streak effects of rain were added under the window sills. The best thing about this kind of weathering work is that references are everywhere, often just across the street.http://i719.photobucket.com/albums/ww195/jonathanmock/12_zpscrxj4hsi.jpg
Jonathan Mock
After a coat of Matt Acrylic Varnish the model is pretty much finished, though were this to placed within a diorama setting, more weathering and detail work in the first of debris, timbers etc.. could be added to blend it into the scene.Apart from the spray cans, everything here was hand painted using Humbrol acrylics, two quality brushes - one a round 00 and the other a flat brush - and weathered using the weathering powders. No airbrushes, no fancy tools, just basic modelling techniques. http://i719.photobucket.com/albums/ww195/jonathanmock/13_zpsduanq0xf.jpg
