| Description

With the ability to mount patrols for up to twelve hours, the Rolls-Royce Griffon powered Avro Shackleton AEW.2 provided Britain’s airborne early warning protection for almost 19 years. Following the withdrawal of HMS Ark Royal and her compliment of Gannet AEW aircraft, the Gannet’s radar units were simply removed and attached under the forward fuselage of the new AEW version of the Shackleton.

Tracing its lineage back to the famous Avro Lancaster bomber, the Shackleton was a long-range maritime patrol aircraft, which was used primarily on anti-submarine operations, but was also required to perform a number of other roles. Entering RAF service in 1951, the majority of Shackletons were powered by the mighty Rolls Royce Griffon engine and were the last aircraft in the illustrious line of four engined propeller powered bomber aircraft to see Royal Air Force service.

As the British government issued plans of their intention to scrap HMS Ark Royal, the navy were concerned that their ships would lose important airborne early warning capability, which was simply not an option. The solution was to put the radar units used on Ark Royal’s Fairey Gannets into the airframe of the trusty Avro Shackletons and although these were obviously land based aircraft, the impressive endurance of the Shackleton would greatly enhance the effectiveness of the navy’s airborne early warning capabilities.

Twelve Shackleton airframes were converted to AEW Mk.2 standard and operated in the colours of No.8 Squadron, originally at RAF Kinloss in early 1972. Following the completion of significant runway strengthening works at nearby RAF Lossiemouth, the Shackletons moved to Lossiemouth in August 1973, where they remained until the unit finally disbanded in 1991.

% Safety Notice

As the last of the mighty Avro piston powered four engined aircraft, the Shackleton can trace its history back to the famous Lancaster of the Second World War, although it was to remain in service much longer than its illustrious predecessor. Possessing incredible endurance, the Shackleton provided the Royal Air Force with an effective long-range maritime solution for 40 years, which is testament to the strength and reliability of the aircraft’s design.

Admirable Early Warning

This is my 3rd Airfix Shackleton, I already have 2 MR. 2s. Construction is very straightforward for a model with a 20 inch wingspan and four contra-rotating propellers, but does need
a degree of care to get the best out of it. Interior detail is comprehensive but very little of it will be seen after the fuselage is assembled, detail in the undercarriage bays is sufficient but can be enhanced if you wish: parts are provided for wheels up. The weapons and stores sprue from the MR. 2 kit is not included in this kit but it would have been nice to have the Lindholme Air-Sea Rescue containers to hang in the weapons bay to illustrate the aircraft’s secondary Search and Rescue role. Colour scheme choices are limited, the aircraft only flew with one squadron, but Airfix have provided marking for two of the surviving examples at different times in their lives on the very comprehensive decal sheet. The finished model captures the look and sit of the real aeroplane very well.... Read more

A BRILLIANT model!

I bought this model from a model shop and I spent the subsequent 3 months making it. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Yes there are a few issues with some minor gaps and all that sort of thing but with a model of this size you expect that sort of thing. But the problems aren't difficult to overcome. If you don't like fiddly decals then don't buy this. However if that isn't a problem and like me, you love this aeroplane then I would definitely recommend this to anyone with a decent amount of patience. :)

Shackleton - cautiously recommended

I built this model straight after the Lancaster 1/111. The Lancaster is an outstanding kit and I was expecting something close to the same with this one The interior is brilliant - that's where much of the fun stopped. Fitting up the interior and closing up the fuselage parts was a nightmare There was far more flash than I expected which did also slow things down The fit of the engine nacelles to the fuselage was also poor So I guess that I have mixed feelings about this model - the interior adds a whole new dimension to the kit, you do get a classic British plane to your collection BUT with quite a bit of unwanted frustration in the build process Recommended with caution!
