You could also look at Ark Royal as it has a small superstructure or a smaller ship like Belfast, Campbeltown or Graf Spee. If you want to go for something very basic look for the series 1 kits like Great Western. You will need to hunt the model shows for some of these.

If it can still be had for a "modeler price" rather than a "collector price", the Airfix Type 21 frigate (quite possibly sold as the class name vessel HMS Amazon), picked as being smaller overall hence smaller hull pieces, and relatively recent.

Yes i have noticed a trend of ships being priced very high or is it just me as I have to date never paid full price

I agree with other contributors that modern warship models can be simpler to construct because of the more streamlined design of the original. I managed to obtain from e-bay a reasonably priced HMS Devonshire recently, a possible good starter kit because it's a reasonable size and easy build. The same could be said of the Rommel, which I would like to see again after all these years. One kit which would certainly fit the bill is the Moskva, which I unfortunately missed back in the day. I often wonder what happened to some of the old Airfix moulds; if they have been lost would it not be possible in this day and age to reverse engineer a new one? i.e. find an old kit and build a new mould from the existing sprues. In any event it would be good to see some long lost ship kits re-appear in the 'Classics' range.
