Two Vulcans

Ratch

Recommended Posts

Back in 2013 I was given these two Vulcans that had been started.

This one has had dramatic wing-surgery, back-dating it to a B.I

This one seems to be an OOB B.2

http://pic100.picturetrail.com/VOL761/13303934/24758070/413232687.jpg

The undercarriage doors are shut, so in-flight it will be

Both have parts missing - I've managed to scrounge some bits and raided my spares box for others

Let's see where these go

Hi Ratch, when I posted my Vulcan B.2 (BS) a couple of months ago, you said you had 2 part build models that had been donated to you. Would appear you have worked out what the conversion is that has been started. And I assume you are now going to complete both kits so I look forward to more updates so I can follow your build

Here's what I've been doing with the B1A

Tyre weights in the nose

Closing up the fuselage

http://pic100.picturetrail.com/VOL761/13303934/24764066/413243136.jpg

The previous owner had assembled the tail and added a fillet, presumably to fit the smaller original tail cone. As I was to model the B1A rather than the B1, I removed the fillet and cleaned up the facing surfaces.

Looking Good so far Ratch and not easy doing 2 large aircraft at the same time! I have done that with 2 single engined fighters or a couple of AFV's in the past when I wanted to build up my forces quickly but have never attempted it with a big build!!

Is it the B.2 that will be displayed in flight as you stated that the previous owner had glued the under-carriage doors in place (closed), just from the photo's it seems you have weighted the nose on both models?

I determined that the B1A could be configured with the wheels down and have its airbrakes deployed.

http://pic100.picturetrail.com/VOL761/13303934/24764066/413252407.jpg

To this end I drilled out the four corners of each of the four panels that form the airbrakes on the upper wings. An Olfa P-Cutter was used to cut out these panels.

http://pic100.picturetrail.com/VOL761/13303934/24764066/413252409.jpg

The airbrakes were constructed using scrap plastic sheet and rod from my salvage box.

http://pic100.picturetrail.com/VOL761/13303934/24764066/413252410.jpg

http://pic100.picturetrail.com/VOL761/13303934/24764066/413252411.jpg

At this point I realised that the Olympus jet exhausts were missing and I would be unable to complete the model, so I bit the bullet and searched Hannants. I found a Flightpath upgrade set. Mart must have bought this and probably still has the B1 tail unit and exhausts, having converted the wings. At £28.25 (inclusive of postage) this was not cheap, but to complete a kit I had given to me was worth it in my opinion. I added the aerial thingies as per the drawings that were in the kit box.

http://pic100.picturetrail.com/VOL761/13303934/24764066/413252414.jpg

I removed the ECM tail unit in readiness to accept the B1 cone.

http://pic100.picturetrail.com/VOL761/13303934/24764066/413252415.jpg

Like the B1A, I noticed that the exhausts were missing from the B2 and I had no suitable substitute, so I searched Hannants and found replacements by Flightpath at £9.95 inclusive of postage and decided to invest.

http://pic100.picturetrail.com/VOL761/13303934/24764066/413252408.jpg

I also added the aerials and stuff.

Now to wait for the postie...

Of course, now I have the upgrade sets there are several things that required action earlier that I didn't know about. The series 201 tail pipes require a chunk to be removed from the moulded wings. I effected this with my Rotary Grinder and superglued the pipes in place. Of course this left huge chasms of gaps that needed filling.

http://pic100.picturetrail.com/VOL761/13303934/24764066/413264347.jpg

The filler shrunk somewhat.

http://pic100.picturetrail.com/VOL761/13303934/24764066/413264350.jpg

and require a second fill & sand session.

It was a similar story with the B.1 tail cone

though to me they appear to be at the wrong angle - but what do I know.

And there is a large fret of PE.

One thing you might be interested in Ratch.

To contrast with the B2 ECM tail radome, I fitted a less 'thimble-y' one for the Red Steer MkI to my B1A.

I simply plunge moulded a copy of the Matchbox Victor's tail cone end, then trimmed it to fit and sanded it in situ..

Not sure the image insert worked, but a side-by-side comparison on real Vulcans can be seen at:

Hi Rarch

Another magnum opus. Coming on nicely, sure seems a lot of work. Looking forward to seeing the final results.

I've never tried PE on aircraft only 600th & 350th ships and that can be a real pain but gererally worth the effort in the end.. I sometimes wonder if PE in 1/72 scale wouldn't appear a bit two dimentionable.

Hi Ratch. I see from  the photos that those hard orange plastic ends are still in place on your clamps. They stay in place a lot better without tending to slip on curved surfaces if the orange bits are junked and replaced by bits of softer, self adhesive rubber foam.

I decided to give the B.1 markings for XA897 of 230 Operational Conversion Unit circa 1956 at RAF Waddington. My first attempt was to write the serials on clear decal paper, and though the results were not bad, they lacked the uniformity of printed decals; so I reverted to cutting out individual letters from the supplied sheets with additional As from Carpena.

http://pic100.picturetrail.com/VOL761/13303934/24764066/413287366.jpg

The supplied decals are probably the worst I’ve experienced from Airfix; breaking up as they are applied. Even the small decals suffered this problem. Luckily I have two sets and resorted to coating the required markings with Microscale Liquid Decal Film.

Hi Ratch.

Two more great builds thanks for showing the way. Love the photos of the low flying B2. One way to trim the trees.

Hope you have plenty of room in your cabnet, would be nice if you could pose one together with a period RAF fighter to show the shear size of the Vulcan.

Again thanks and keep them coming.
