Description
The F4F Wildcat was the US Navy's primary carrier borne fighter aircraft at the start of the Second World War. Characterised by its stubby appearance the Wildcat had been developed from Gruman's successful range of pre-war biplanes and had entered service with the US Navy a year prior to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. By the time of the crucial battles from Midway and Guadalcanal the F4F-4 model had become the most numerous varient and new tactics enabled American naval and marine pilots to gain the upper hand on the previously all-conquering Mitsubishi Zero.

I love this kit. The lines are correct, and the panels are not too small or too deep. The cart is correct (missing only one detail) and the Cartograf decals are good. I love the ability to rotate moving parts. The pilot, however, was called Marion Carl, not Marian as you write in the instructions. In addition, I have a doubt: your kit is based on photo N. H. C. 80-G-37932, with a mechanic on this plane, Guadalcanal 2 February 1943 (not 1942). At that date, Marion Carl had 16.5 wins: maybe the photos are for Guadalcanal pilot John Lucian Smith, he had 19 kills already.

Well done, Airfix :)
This Wildcat is something of a rarity in modelling these days; a kit that's good for beginners, but can also present a decent challenge to experienced modellers. To make it in the flying position is reasonably simple and straightforward, even if it's your first model, but if you want to put in a bit more work, the slightly fiddly landing gear is well worth the effort! Setting the wings to their folded position is a bit trickier, but looks utterly fantastic (And saves space on your shelf)

Terrific model
I got back into scale models after a several year lay off and while traveling on the road for school/work. I picked up this kit because it looked like it would add a bit more detail and difficulty with a skill 2 level followed by a simple color scheme. This kit did not disappoint. The landing gear took a bit of work but is very stable which is always a concern with some kits where the wheels are barely held on. I went off the recommended color scheme an opted for a pale green top followed by grey bottom which I think turned out aesthetically pleasing. This model turned out great with a hand brush and has enough panel line and cockpit detail to satisfy your casual builder. I would recommend this kit and I plan to get another in the future to build it with the wings retracted. ... Read more
