Introducing Airfix KitStarter

Introducing Airfix KitStarter

Today (29th May) sees the launch of an exciting, experimental concept exclusive to Airfix.com - KitStarter.

KitStarter is your chance to decide which vintage Airfix models, from a selection, are put back into production for a limited edition run. Here's how it works. We've delved into the archives and pulled out a selection of old tooling for some classic Airfix kits. The tooling has been carefully restored and tested at our factory in the UK, ready to start producing a new run of kits.

The Airfix archive includes a wide variety of models, including subjects that you might not expect such as historical figures, birds and even dinosaurs! We will be adding more kits each month as the KitStarter project develops, and you can even suggest what you'd like to see revived on the KitStarter Forum.

If you see a model on the KitStarter site that you'd like to see back in production, show your support by placing a pre-order. Once a kit reaches a threshold number of orders (you'll be able to track the support for each kit on the site), there's then a two week 'last orders' period for any remaining orders to be placed before the kit goes into limited production.

To secure a KitStarter kit you will need to have placed a pre-order, they won't be on general sale once they have been manufactured, although if a kit proves very popular it may go back into the KitStarter cycle for a second time.

As the kits will be manufactured here in the UK, we expect final delivery of the models within a few weeks of production.

KitStarter has launched with two classic kits from the 1970s - Bluetits and Bullfinches - then periodically we'll add new vintage kits to the page. In addition, KitStarter will have its own thread on the Airfix Forum where you can suggest models that you'd like to see revived.

Will any of these classic kits make it back into production? You decide!

Richard Ames, Hornby Hobbies Chief Executive Officer, said:

“This is a really exciting initiative for Airfix. We have a very large back-catalogue of model kits, many that are still remembered fondly by our consumers. We get lots of feedback about which models people would like us to re-introduce. Our KitStarter crowd-funding platform will enable Hornby to interact much more closely with our consumers. This will help us gauge demand accurately and respond quickly to their requests. Then we can prioritise which models we re-introduce."

Head over to the KitStarter page now and back a model to see it return to production.
