Welcome to Airfix Workbench, an exciting new addition to the Airfix website where every month we will be taking you behind-the-scenes of the Airfix Product Development department, tracking the development of Airfix models often many months before they are released.
Why not suggest a topic for a future Workbench, or discuss the latest post over on the Workbench Forum?
The latest edition of Workbench is something of a monster and includes more exclusive imagery than we have ever brought you in a single blog before. We have the latest development update from our new 1/72nd scale Blackburn Buccaneer project, as well as the latest news and build pictures from our new range of 1/35th scale military vehicles. All this and more awaits your inspection.
With Dakotas, Meteors, Mustangs, Spitfires and Walrus amphibians, the latest edition of Workbench provides readers with a comprehensive update on some of the most popular model releases from over the past few months. We also include an impressive build feature which details how a classic Airfix kit inspired a return to modelling for one talented Workbench reader, after a break which lasted 15 years and included a re-location from Southampton to New Zealand.
One of the great things about modelling is that our hobby allows enthusiasts to create their own scale tributes in commemoration of any anniversary or historic event, or more specifically the vehicles and craft which took part in them. In this latest edition of Workbench, we look at three historic events which are being commemorated during 2019, all of which will result in plenty of modelling tributes taking place over the coming few months.
In the latest edition of Workbench, as well as featuring all the latest model release and development information, we ask our readers a question. If you were charged with overseeing the renovation of a major UK museum, which would require the re-positioning and effective display of many valuable aviation and military exhibits, how would you go about it? In the 94th edition of our blog, we describe how modelling skill and a number of classic Airfix kits proved to be the ideal solution to this fascinating problem.
Another bumper edition of Workbench awaits Airfix fans this weekend and includes a closer look at a trio of fantastic 1/72nd scale kits which will be gracing many a dining room table and modelling workstations over the coming few months. We also bring you details of an interesting Starter Set build completion in our ‘Out of the box’ feature and include a time-lapse event set up video, taken at the recent Halifax Model Show. If you were one of the show exhibitors, you might just spot yourself!
We have a real treat for Workbench readers in the latest edition of our blog. Not only do we have exclusive development information from our recently announced Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG 17 Fresco new tooling project, we also feature the work of a young Airfix product designer, who is just embarking on his career in this fantastic hobby. Following in some illustrious modelling footsteps, we find out what it is like to undertake your first major Airfix design project and how you go about it.
As one of the most capable Cold War strike jets to see British service, the Blackburn Buccaneer was crammed full of technical innovation, in addition to being the heaviest aircraft to have ever operated from the decks of Britain’s relatively small aircraft carriers. With impressive aviation credentials such as these, spare a thought for the Airfix designer who was charged with producing the latest and most accurate scale representation of this distinctive aircraft, a project which would call on all his years of industry experience. In the latest edition of Workbench, we feature some of the fascinating development work behind the production of this latest Airfix aviation classic.
