| Description

The stable flight characteristics of the government designed Royal Aircraft Factory BE2c made it an ideal choice for use as a home defence night fighter aircraft.  It famously claimed the destruction of the first German Airship over Britain on 3rd September 1916, earning pilot Lt. William Leefe Robinson a Victoria Cross.

At a time when obtaining the latest battlefield information was the main focus of aviation activity over the Western Front, the Royal Aircraft Factory BE2c was designed to enable its crew to obtain valuable reconnaissance information as effectively as possible.  With extremely docile handling characteristics, the aircraft was designed to fly straight and level, with minimal input from the pilot.

As more effective German fighter aircraft began to enter service, the stability of the BE2c became its Achilles heel and combat losses became critical.  Operating as a Home Defence night fighter, the stability of the BE2c again proved beneficial and the aircraft claimed the first victory over the hated German Airships, which were referred to by the British public as ‘Baby Killers’.

Lots of rigging on this one...Joy!

Another great WWI airplane from Airfix. I had no particular problems with this one. The strut guides were of great help, as were the indicators for the rigging holes. I certainly hope that Airfix will re-tool other WWI subjects in the future.

Really Quite Well Engineered

I loved building this plane. This is one of the first models that I have built since the age of 9. I am now aged 38. I agree with one other reviewer however, in that the prop can be quite hard to stay on. I decided to paint the plane in the primary colour scheme. However, when I went to put the decals on for that scheme, I had a bit of an accident with the tail decal and ruined it. So I used the tail decal from the secondary scheme of transfers. I contemplated very hard as to weather or not to do the rigging: I eventually decided against it. I have done rigging on a much cheaper Revell WW1 Plane, and it turned out quite alright. But I did not want to risk the possibility of ruining this nice model. The struts are very delicate. You have to be very careful with them, especially regarding to the point and angle that you cut them off the sprue at. I just wish Airfix would produce more WW1 1/72 scale planes. It seems a shame that they only have 2 in their catalogue available for purchase.... Read more

almost perfect but not quite there yet

The kit is brilliant but the decal are quite thick and the prop pin is to weak to withstand the forces of a zeppelin. I have had glue it back about 5 times overall a good kit.
