| Description

The British named the M3 "General Stuart" upon receipt of the tank under the Lend-Lease program in June of 1941. The tank's ability to "shoot and scoot" as well as keeping the crew safe from small fire arms fire, earned an affectionae nickname of "Honey" by its operators. The British cavalry men liked this tank as it could travel 10 to 20 mph faster than their own or enemy tanks, and for its ease of maintenance. The M3s were designed to replace the outdated M2s. The M3 incorporated a thicker armor, lengthened hull, and a trailer idler wheel to act as another road wheel to decrease ground pressure and improve weight distribution.

The M3 turret had three pistol ports and shortened recoil mechanism. It was also equipped waith a 37mm M6 gun, which was adequate early in the war, but by 1942, the German counterparts far surpassed the range of the M3. The narrow width of the M3 could not accommodate a larger gun. The M3A1 was fitted with a Westinghouse gyrostabilizer, a turret basket and an oil gear hydrolic traverse mechanism, but lacked a turret cupola. The earlier version of the M3A1, the Stuart III, was powered by Continental W-970-9A-7 cylinder radial gas 250 hp engine but by mid 1941, the Stuart IVs came off the production lines with Guiberson T-1020 air cooled radial diesel engine.

Great value for money from Airfix

This is a great value for money kit and a real gem. There are no fit issues. Comes with a choice of vinyl tracks or individual tracks parts. You also have an interior if you wish to have the hatches open. You can build straight from the box and have a really nice model. There are a lot of spare parts, so you can build a M3 of your choice. Sprue A has extra rivets if you want to add that extra detail. This kit is ideal if you don't have much shelf space, as it will sit in your hand.

Great value for money from Airfix

A real value for money kit from Airfix. You have the choice of individual track links or 2 lengths of vinyl track. If using the vinyl tracks it is best to staple them together for strength. You also get 2 types of road wheel, spoked and solid and a choice of stowage bins. The kit has a full interior, but not necessary if you build it with the hatches closed. There are no fit issues and is ideal for the beginner or experienced modeller. With all the optional parts and aftermarket decals you can build a M3 of your choice.

On the down side. If building the American M3, there are no guns for the side sponsons and the decals are not the same as shown on the web site. That said, it is still a great kit with endless possibilities. I thoroughly recommend it.... Read more
