| Description

The Supermarine Swift was originally designed as an interceptor fighter but was most successful as a low level photo reconnaissance aircraft, operating over Germany during the late 1950s. A strong airframe with good speed at low level, it excelled in this role, often beating NATO contemporaries in photo reconnaissance competitions.

Overlooked Fifties RAF Jet

I have always been interested in the Swift, mainly because its development was so difficult when rushed into service with some significant shortcomings.
The kit is nicely detailed with some care being needed with the cockpit and jet intakes to ensure the assembly is correct. The fit of the wings to the fuselage was good, with a small amount of filler on one side. Much of the detail is hidden during assembly, particularly the cockpit area. Some of the parts are very delicate and needed careful removal from the sprue, particularly the undercariage parts and pitot tube.
The amount of weight required in the nose is noted in the instructions but there is not a great deal of space and it is easy to get a tail-sitter.
Final assembly was simple as there are no external stores with its dedicated Photo Recon role.
When finished it is a very compact aircraft with its belly tank giving a definately pregnant appearance.
Good kit of a rare bird

Interesting Subject

A recent entry in the classic jet lineup for Airfix. An odd choice as it was not particularly successful, especially compared to the Hunter. However this is a nicely produced kit with a few eccentricities. The seat has cushion options (belts or not) but lacks a pilot figure to make this sensible. In fact the cockpit tub is quite small so regular pilot figures don't fit (though the one in the Skyhawk was fine). There were some fit issues around the nose and as has need noted the tail has limited fixing surfaces. I also lost the transparent part for the nose camera due to fit issues when closing the fuselage. Otheriwse this builds into a very attractive model with good options (ailerons, flaps and undercarriage plus camera ports glazed or fared). A rare subject, well executed and an advert for more 1950s and 60s subjects which many would love to see.... Read more

Swift

Another excellent model from Airfix. The model as a whole went together perfectly. I had some problems fitting the tail, there was very little purchase from the join (I recommend fitting them after applying the rear roundel decals). I went for wheels down, I found the undercarriage fiddly, but looks great finished. I also went for flaps down. There is a couple of choices for finish, I went with the PR option, I have just finished the 1/48 javelin and wanted a change from silver. Lots of detail, it comes with a pilot figure too. Enjoyable build.
