| Description

While the Lancaster saw the vast majority of its service as a high altitude night bomber attacking strategic targets deep within Germany, notably its involvement in the battles of the Ruhr, Hamburg and Berlin, it was a daring low-level raid that gave the Lancaster arguably its finest hour.

The Dambusters raid, as it has since become known, was one the most famous operations of the war.  Led by Wing Commander Guy Gibson, the 19 specially modified Lancaster bombers attacked the Mohne, Eder, Sorpe and Ennepe dams, with the Mohne and Eder dams being breached.  This caused widespread destruction to both the German war effort and to food production.

The dams were breached using a special type of bomb, the Upkeep mine, or ‘bouncing bomb’. This was rotated before being dropped so that it skipped along the surface before impacting against the dam, sinking and exploding, thus rupturing the dam.  This avoided the need for a high altitude raid and avoided the torpedo nets. The attack was a partial success but greatly improved the morale of the Allies and the British public.

Lancaster bomber

This kit is a great gift for more experienced modelers as it had lots of delicate pieces. The main frame broke of and it seems this is common.I loved the finish,i'd recommend getting a thick brush and pre-painting the optional bomb.

This kit is far more than the sum of its parts as it also allows you to build any normal B1/111Lanc as well. The fit of the parts is spot on and it has the correct 'look' which is missing from other choices. All in all the definitive Lanc in this scale and also at a sensible price, so congrats to Airfix. Can't wait to see a Wellington or Hallybag next.

just awful

Firstly the day I got it i was very exited to open it and build it. I opened it and oh the transfers and instructions had just been slammed into the box with no care at all. Ok i thought maybe that was just a small thing, then i found that because of the way it was packed one of the pieces was broken. I contacted airfix and was told to wait 28 DAYS!!! for a reply. I decided to just continue and build the plane and hope it would still look good. Then i began to find multiple problems with the instructions contradicting itself many times and i was obviously getting a bit stressed at this point. when it came the time to put the fuselage together i realised it wouldn't fit properly. There was a 2mm gap all the way around the model. I have finished the model now and fixed a few of the problems but that does not excuse the fact that it is a badly designed model which in my opinion feels like airfix rushed when designing the model. All in all very disappointed. ... Read more

Airfix Says...

Please take my apologies for the problems with your kit but I do hope the Spares team were able to help. The 28-day waiting period is a maximum limit, as oftentimes requests are dealt with much quicker. I would also ask that you let our Customer Care team know the specific steps in the instructions that were contradictory so they can pass the details on: www.airfix.com/contact
