A Very Different Build - Higgins LCVP (Royal Navy)

After years of modeling planes, trains and automobiles - I finally got round to my first boat kit.

I acquired a 1/76th Scale Higgins LCVP (split from the D-Day Landings set) and last night I set about building it...

It went together extremely quickly - the fit and finish is superb, she's ready for some very light filling and then some paint will be applied.

Hi James.

I see you're branching out, hopefully it won't be your last ship build. If you enjoy this build maybe you'd like to try the RAF Rescue Launch, at 1/72 it'll fit quite nicely in with your aircraft.

I have the LCM Mk.III to build too, the Rescue Launch is seriously tempting...

Then Airfix have done a Vosper series III MTB, and 2 makers have done different block number S-boots...

Oops, I have the Rescue Launch en-route as I type.

However I've got to get on with a number of OO Gauge Loco & Rolling Stock Commissions first - including finishing off a couple of Bloater kits (that's a GWR Fish Van btw), as the parts & decals I needed have all finally arrived.

There'll probably be a photo surfacing tomorrow of the LCVP after the first stage of paint, but that will be it for a bit.

Lovely model - I cant wait to see some more paint on....

I am curious abuot the stand - does it come with the kit (I presume representing the deck fittings to hold the boats on a voyage?)

There'll be a wait as I have a number of lococ commissions on the go at the moment.

The stand comes with the kit, though I'm not sure if it's prototypical though.

  • 1 month later...

Finally after a very busy month or so on the OO Gauge Loco & rolling stock commissions, I've been able to get the LCVP back on the workbench and into paint.

Just some minor touching up to do and the guns to paint & fit and she'll be ready for transfers (all 3 of them!)

I have a few days respite from Loco's and Rolling Stock, so there may be another build or two ;)

Hi James.

A nice read and an interesting build thanks for the photos and write up. I can't wait till you start the RAF Rescue Launch. By the way you might need to buy two ( or is that asking two much) as there are two versions with very different colour schemes, I'm already eyeing a second one at our LMS.

You really are branching out, is that a Sherman looking for a nautical experience, I see lurking in plain sight.

Oh the Sherman has a home or will do when it's finished  😉

The Rescue launch will have to wait as there's a build that needs to be finished (Shackleton AEW.2) and one I'm being pestered about on another forum to start by a Loco Client of mine - which unless Admin get a non-Airfix build thread up (which was promised) and running I won't be able to share (except in subtle cameo's).
