B-17G New Tool

Toboldlygo

Recommended Posts

I acquired this kit a few weeks ago (after it was released) - I can remember building the previous tooling many years ago. This one is absolutely bonkers in the level of detail for a 1:72 kit, I'm currently on page 4 & 5 of the instructions (though I'm not completely following them for ease of painting)

The main cockpit isn't glued to the main bomb bat assembly yet

From recent experience I'd build sub-assemblies as far as I'd dare before painting.

Also, if I may suggest, it might look good to just paint the window and fuselage frames on the starboard nose insert so you can see the interior a bit better.

This kit definitely benefits from building sub-assemblies and then painting (less paint to remove when fitting the whole thing together)

I’m not sure whether to leave the starboard nose panel clear or just leave as a push fit – so it can be removed.

Something I noticed however is that the bombs fitted in the positions on the instructions, won’t allow the bomb racks to fit.

I’ve now painted the insides of the fuselage and added some of the glazing. Picture shows the fuselage taped together to allow the hole to be drilled for the boomerang shaped antenna – that sits atop of the fuselage above the bomb-aimer/ forward gunning positions.

There are also a number of parts in paint (and currently drying), hopefully tomorrow I should be able to show some real progress.

First update for quite a while, it's beginning to look like a B-17...

I've neatly finished the engines and there are a number of parts in paint..

I treated myself to the 1:24th scale Hawker Typhoon for Christmas - my brain melted when I read the instructons!!

More parts added (engines are dry fitted). Incidently the exhaust maifolds needed some trimming to get them to fit properly. I'm having a break from it atm the moment as it's been very ttime consuming build and I have steam locos that don't renumber and weather themselves...

Hi James.

You really are a glutton for punishment, can't help wondering if you have a masochistic streak somewhere.

The B 17 looking great so far and glad to see you're enjoying it, will follow your build with interest. This model isn't available in SA at present maybe sometime this year or even next, the Kate only arrived here just in time for Christmas.

Rember we do this for fun                          John the Pom

I used to build parts for real Harrier's for a living (and they were sods to work on). The Typhoon is one of my favourite WW2 aircraft (along with the Hurricane, Beaufighter, Mosquito and Hudson*) and was built not to far from where I live.

I've just recommenced work on the B 17G today (I've been busy with model train commissions). I've been doing some light filling and I am currently masking up all the glazing. Hopefully in the not to distant future, I'll post some more photo's.

* My Grandfather flew Hudson's during the war (including a bombing raid on the Scharnhorst) - please Airfix can you produce a decent version of them!!

Engines in place and she's sitting on her wheels - still so much to do.

Band round the nose needs correcting (had some bleed through)

I'll remove the masking from the glazing once the transfers are in place and I've sealed them with a coat or two with varnish

More progress on the B17..

Bomb bay doors fitted..

Engine cowlings correctly painted and fitted

/media/tinymce_upload/3e5a0aa7f6d0a14cf63438f4fc8cbe98.jpg

Note.. Aerial on the nose is dry fitted (had to open the hole to correct size)

Props are painted black, just need to paint the other colours.

Tomorrow, I will give the whole aircraft a coat (or two) of gloss varnish and allow it to dry before I start applying transfers.

Finally finished and if I ever get ideas about doing a silver (aluminium) colour scheme again - shoot me.

Next up is a !:72nd scale Harrier AV-8S (white & light grey colour scheme - oh joy) and then if I don't get tempted by another kit it will be the mighty 1:24th scale Typhoon..

Hi James.

Congratulations on finishing the B17. Looks great, and after 4 months work, a model to be proud of. Well done, a real magnum opus. Just checked back at Ratch's !/24 Ju 87 build that took him two months so your four months is good especially as yours had four engines.

Great write up as well, sure to be a good reference for other builders. thanks again for all your effort. Looking forward to seeing and reading more of your adventures.

Remember we do this for fun                  John the Pom.
