TNBB: The Sequel - Avro Lancaster B.I (F.E)

Recommended Posts

And so it begins...

As the dust settles from the Shack build, I opted to build her illustrious predecessor the Lancaster. I opted for the B.I (Far East) version, my last Lancs where built over 35 years ago - both B.III's (Matchbox and Revell's Dambuster version).

Made a start today, again as on the Shack I'm using one-side of the fuselage as jig to ensure no alignment issues later on - though there isn't as much to cause problems.

As a matter of interest, when did they start putting spars in the wings?  I seem to remember slapping a few heavies together as a kid (c1960) and the wings just went in tab-in-slot.  And thanks for the fuze-side-as-jig idea... That's the sort of tip that can sve a lot of headaches for a newbie like me.

Related query - Are those slots in the spars for undercart bay sides?

Personal account - That same Revell Dambuster tool was my first "heavy", about 10 years before you indicate!

Don't know what the parts were called but on mine they hold horizontal components of the undercarriage bay.  (The UC were a bit of a bugger to fit if I remember correctly).  Broke at one of the slots, though... Bit of a weak spot (and a bit of fat-fingers if Im honest).

The original Airfix moulds and tooling from the 1960's onwards used the old style wing-slots or tabs for glueing the wings on and then you had to make sure they stayed in place at the correct angle for ages until the glue dried  🤔.

The correct wing spar tooling has occurred since Hornby took over Airfix about 8 years ago and they used CAD to develop the moulds with very accurate detail. The wing spars aren't used on every new tooling but seem to be used on all the 'heavies'!!

Yes they are and need to be handled with care at this point. The slots in the fuselage a very tight and need a file otherwise you can snap the spar an one of the slots (I did, but managed to fix it)

The Revell Dambuster Lanc was a kit my elder Brother started and gave up on - to fiddly for him ;)

With regards to Uncle Pete's query about when Airfix started putting spars in wings, I think it was when they started retooling kits - it's certainly a much better set up than the tab and slot.

@james_mower - Thanks about the undercart detail: I'd expected that (and don't presently own a "latest tool Airfix Lanc kit" (latest because I think this is their 3rd or 4th version)).

My Revell was a cereal company freebie!  😆

@"Uncle Pete" - I'd agree about the spars (or stub spars) dating from the latest batch of new tools, so I'd guess at the last 5 to 10 years. I'd also agree that, subject to the earlier note about them needing "more care in assembly", they're a marked improvement over "tongue and slot" location.

If in doubt, paint it black....

Currently building up the instrument panel using the Eduard etches, they certainly add some depth compared to the transfers provided. I will endeavour to take a picture once I've finished it.

Can't see anything inside mine anyway and I didn't even get the glass to stick in the fuselage windows (they're just holes) so you might as well.  I was tempted to put a cup of tea on the map table, though...

Today's progress,

Port-side fuselage interior painted and etches added

Main instrument panel installed and whole sub-assembly ready for installation to the port-side fuselage.

Using the starboard fuselage for additional alignment, interior floor (etc) is glued in place.

Looks suspiciously like a Lancaster all of a sudden.

Image upload is still not working for me Herr Airfix and I'm still relying on a hosting site.

In the meantime portside fuselage is compete and I have yet again deviated from the instructions..

I discovered last night that the Airfix upload was working again for me, I tried it after I'd noted other users said they could now post pics again but there's been no word on the issue from the big A.

But you seem to be managing OK with your picture hosting site and I wiĺl keep mine in reserve ....... just in case.

But I like your delivery of your posts, think I still have a lot to learn. They are very informative with a good delivery. And you keep doing models that hold more than a little interest for me.

FWIW I always "post glaze" stuff like that with Clearfix or Krystal Klear (I can get the latter over a larger opening, but the former dries a more even thickness).

Sadly the Airfix photo uploading bug isn't fixed for me.

After working the weekend, I still managed to button up the fuselage, it will only need minor filling - fortunately. Yet again I'm not following the intructions and adding bits from later on in the build.

Fortunately the Lanc wlll fit in my spray booth with the wings on, so they will be going on prior to paint.

My delivery of posts, may have (more than) a little to do with building aircraft and being exposed to process sheets for many years...

As promised another update - before I have to do a few more locos :(

http://pic20.picturetrail.com/VOL1315/13761406/24786812/413597720.jpg

Topside of wings in place - very little fettling needed to get them fit.

http://pic20.picturetrail.com/VOL1315/13761406/24786812/413597722.jpg

Next two photos (above) - wing undersides glued in place...

http://pic20.picturetrail.com/VOL1315/13761406/24786812/413597721.jpg

Tail plane in place - I won't fit rudders or engine nacelles until she's painted (makes masking easier)

Despite working the weekend you still made decent progress. I did an extra shift on Saturday and my build of the Me 262 almost ground to a halt.

And I think the Instruction are normally aimed at the more inexperienced modellers, more once we have gained a modicum of skill we can do the build that best suits our methods and probably like you the instructions are mainly used as a reference guide rather than a 'must follow'!

Look like today's Website upgrade, fixed the image upload problem for me - however lost all my links for the photo's from the hosting site. So I've done an image dump here  for all those I'd posted on previous entry's using Picturerail and one new one  😎

All the engine nacelles are done, just need to do some filling and then she can be masked for painting.

Yeah I noticed last night that all the photo's I'd uploaded from my hosting site (mainly my Spitfire Mk.1 post) during the recent problems had disappeared. I emailed the forum and they are not sure what the problem is and stated it maybe a long fix??

A 2 pound cross-pien hammer should work on the developers,  it use to solve numerous problems on the leaping heap - also known as the Harrier..

That's a very nice, clean-looking build James. I really do enjoy watching the progress you make on the models you build (and the final results of course).

😀

Thank you Timmas, though if you heard the colourful language that comes out during the builds - you would think I had Tourettes!!

I've had a slow few days, the main canopy has well and truly annoyed me to the point I stripped the paint off this morning - I will mask it completely & temporarily fix it in place with varnish, while I paint the plane.

I also worked out that you can fit the main undercarriage and fit the engine nacelles afterwards, so hence I've fitted the wing to engine nacelle fairings now, rather than after paint.
