Description
The Severn class lifeboat is the largest lifeboat in the RNLI fleet introduced into the fleet in 1995. As an all-weather lifeboat, she can take on the worst sea conditions and comes into her own on long offshore searches and rescues. When lives are at risk out at sea, time is of the essence. With a top speed of 25 knots and a range of 250 nautical miles, the Severn class lifeboat can reach casualties fast in calm or rough seas. She carries a small powered Y boat, ideal for rescues near rocks and shallow waters, and can be launched using the Severn's integral crane. The kit in this box enables a fully detailed model of this RNLI Lifeboat to be built. Full detail of the outside deck, hull and fittings are included and by removing the cabin roof a fully detailed interior can be viewed. The decal scheme will allow any one of the current operational RNLI Severn Class lifeboats to be modelled.
A minimum of £1.25 from the sale of this product will be paid in support of the RNLI.

I was delighted when this kit was re-released. One feature I particularly like is that the decal set contains combinations for every RNLI Lifeboat station with a Severn Class. I chose Falmouth so paired with my 1:72 Westland Helicopter in RNAS Culdrose Markings I have the makings of an air-sea rescue diorama. I found the construction a challenge. If I were to make it again I would have got the construction a little more precise so that the wheelhouse could be removed, doing the very detailed interior justice. I found Fiery Orange a tricky colour to work with and highlight, so I might have used a darker matt orange red colour to start with. I am glad I used Humbrol Decalfix, particular applying the stripes on the hull and Clearfix for the plastic windows. I might replace the aerials with modelling wire as they do tend to snap easily. A handy hint that worked for me was to use pilot figures for the crew since their overalls, lifejackets and helmets are close enough. ... Read more

Well Worth Persevering With
I am one of people who, in truth, will only ever COMPLETELY finish all the models they own. This is one of my 'few' and sits proudly with other RNLI stuff on a shelf in the main part of your house and not in my room.
I made in in bursts of romanticism over several years (shame on me) because as the previous reviewer said there is just so much detail on and in it. Airfix are to be commended for this kit which has a complete interior inside the 'orange area'. A lot of this will be lost when the cabin is closed in, but if made correctly, the cabin can be lifted off to reveal all the hard work.
As with most ship models, a lot of painting must be done both before and during assembly (which will extend the time and patience needed). Anyone wanting a quick kill must look elsewhere. The plastic one mine was a little soft, yet there is still a lot of engraved and raised detail. Out of the box, the kit makes a worthy replica of the Severn. Extra detail could be added without great effort.
There are niggly minus points: the decals were the older type that lacked opacity, a few dedicated crew members would be welcome (these could be fashioned from other figure sets, I know but . . . ) and the rigid inshore boat lacks almost any detail.
This kit is true value for money and I hope the RNLI continue to receive their % from sales. This was something different that made me research, both from pictures and by visits to the Portrush Severn over the years of construction, the subject.
A have another and will do a waterline version, complete with crew out on a shout.
This is also a great subject for anyone interested in 'what if?' paint schemes or conversions.
Buy it, stick with it (sorry) and be proud. ...

Takes more than a month of Sundays but looks terrific in the end
This kit took me a year to put together due to putting it off for days/weeks at a time: it was daunting at times as there is just so much to do. You think it looks simple, just paint it orange and blue, but nooo.... There is so many little bits and pieces that need a tiny bit of paint or adding-to, like the extra aerials, just to make it perfect. Once finished though this is an impressive bulk of a ship to put on a shelf. It makes a nice change from all the camouflage aircraft, green tanks, and grey ships that are trying to kill people - this is saving lives and being bright and cheery with lots of details everyone will like this finished model.
