| Description

Designed at the height of the Cold War during the 1950s, the English Electric Lightning was the only all British Mach 2 fighter to enter service with the RAF, where its performance placed it well ahead of contemporary rivals. The Lightning’s engines were positioned in a unique staggered stacked installation and their huge power gave the Lightning an exceptional rate of climb, service ceiling and top speed. The F1 version of the Lightning entered service in 1959, with the improved F1A following in 1961. Various improved versions of the Lightning were introduced through the 1960s, all of them attempting to either improve the endurance of the aircraft, an area in which the Lightning struggled, or the lack of armament options for the type. While successive variants did improve these areas, the Lightning was still hampered by them up until its eventual replacement in the late 1980s.

English Electric Lightning: Just OK

1/48 Airfix English Electric F1A Lightning: Just finished this today after about a week and a half of working on it. It is OOB except for the detail in the cockpit, seat, and behind canopy. Also added a few bits to the main wheel well and some break lines. The cockpit/seat includes details from the Eduard detail set. This was not the easiest of kits to build but was not that bad either. A few trouble spots such as intake lip ring not fitting well. This is a result of the vague manner in which the whole front wheel gear well and intake cone assembly fit. Instructions could be better on this area as well as other areas. When attaching the horizontal stabilizer to the fuselage there is nothing in the assembly to give you an idea of angle relative to surface plane. If you let the stabilizer lay naturally the way the plastic is molded you will end up with a drastic negative angle. The instruction provide no detail or mention of this. Must use external references.... Read more

Not Happy

I just picked this up. I am not happy with the quality of plastic nor the fit of the model. For the money I would pass on this one.

Brilliant Model

This is one of the best Airfix models I have built. As with other reviewers, I found it fiddly to fit the cockpit and the intake into the fuselage. The other issue was the decals for the cockpit, there is plenty of detail on the parts to paint on instead though. The rest of the model went together really well, with bags of detail. There is very little flash. It looks really good once completed. There is a detailed pilot figure included and a good range of decal and finish options. There's also a choice of armament too. All in all well up to the high standard of Airfix.
