Developed from the Lincoln bomber and sharing with it the DNA of the famous Lancaster, the Avro Shackleton enjoyed a long career with the RAF, first as a maritime patrol aircraft and then as the RAF’s primary AEW (Airborne Early Warning) aircraft. Powered by four Rolls Royce Griffin engines driving contra rotating propellers, the Shackleton was known to be a noisy machine, earning itself a host of nicknames but it still proved to be popular machine with its crews. Entering service in MR.1 guise in 1951, it was 1993 before the aircraft would finally leave frontline service.
The MR.2 Shackleton was introduced in 1953 and introduced a very different nose position to the MR.1, housing two 20mm cannons, with an additional two in a Dorset turret. Combined with its load of torpedoes or depth chargers the Shackleton in this guise was relatively heavily armed for a maritime patrol aircraft. Other uses for the ‘Growler’ was as a colonial policing machine (replacing the Lincoln in this role) as well as monitoring the oceans for drug and arms smugglers, enforcing UN embargos and Air Sea Rescue Work; a role the aircraft performed admirably throughout its service. Although the AEW.2 version remained in service until 1991, the MR.2 was phased out in favour of the Nimrod in the 1970s.
With special permission and help from the Shackleton Preservation Trust, Airfix have been granted exclusive access to the original aircraft as well as the original drawings to produce the high detail CAD imagery for this model. http://www.avroshackleton.co.uk/

A brilliant kit, superbly engineered and well thought out. The fit is so good that I painted the wings off the fuselage and fitted them later, with no filling or work required at the wing to fuselage joint. Can't wait to start my AEW.2!

Stunning Kit
Having purchased this kit from an Airfix Stockist, I was absolutely stunned at the level of detail. It's not a kit for the beginner and requires a lot attention to the instructions and knowing when to skip to later parts in order gain a proper fit and finish. My only criticisms would be, parts of the interior aren't detailed - namely the galley/rest area and the rear observers area. Plus you need to fettle the top corner of the radar consul in order to do variant A (224 Squadron - my Grandfather's Squadron in WW2 btw) with the dorsal turret. Overall a stunning kit.

SHACKLETON MR.2 INTERIOR REVEALED
I have always been a Die-Hard Airfix fan, even though at time it was said other kits were better. But I refused to leave and stayed loyal to Airfix and I think I was rewarded with this kit. It is truly superb with awesome levels of interior detail, especially the radar compartment. As with any kit there are 1 or 2 issues but these are minor and easily overcome, even with moderate modelling experience. I have written a much more detailed reveal in the Airfix Forum dealing with the build etc. if you care to look/comment. On my build I removed a small cross-section of the starboard fuselage (similar to Airfix's CAD images) to reveal the interior detail as I did want all that hidden once the fuselage halves were closed. I will be adding images to this review in the next day or 2! But its a lovely kit and I'm not tempted to follow it up with the AEW.2 version? ... Read more
