Description
As the least effective of the RAF’s interceptor fighters at the start of the Battle of Britain, it is interesting to note that the Boulton Paul Defiant actually entered service much later than either the Spitfire or Hurricane, but was quickly relegated to nightfighter operations when it became obvious the extra weight of the power operated turret made the aircraft a relatively easy target for Luftwaffe fighters.

Airfix have reissued this kit just in time to commemorate both the finest and darkest hours in the Defiant’s career in the Battle for France and the Battle of Britain. The kit is moulded in the now-familiar pale blue-grey plastic. External surface detail is in the form of neat engraved panel lines for metal surfaces with a subtle fabric-over-metal effect on the control surfaces. The cockpit is well detailed with floor, rudder pedals, control column and corrugated side wall skinning, all visible courtesy of an open canopy. The turret is a model in its own right with controls, seat, ammunition tanks, cartridge collectors, motor and air bottle all included. The turret doors can be displayed open or closed. Assembly is conventional and easy; very little filler, if any, will be required. The only let down is the way that the outer and centre main undercarriage doors are moulded as one part instead of separately. Markings are provided for two of 264 Squadron’s Defiants.... Read more
