| Description

Described by famous British test pilot Eric ‘Winkle’ Brown as the most formidable aircraft of WWII, the Messerschmitt Me 262 was a quantum leap in aviation performance terms and stands as one of the most significant aircraft in the history of flight. Had the Luftwaffe been able to deploy large numbers of these impressive fighters, they would have taken a heavy toll of Allied aircraft.

Allied pilots first began reporting the appearance of a strange new aircraft in the skies above Germany during the middle of 1944, much to the consternation of Allied military planners. The aircraft was reported to be capable of tremendous speed, far in excess of even the latest Allied fighters, yet did not appear to have a propeller – as these early contacts ended with the strange aircraft diving away at high speed, missions were launched specifically to investigate these reports, with reconnaissance aircraft searching for unusual activity at Luftwaffe airfields deep into Germany.

They would not have to wait long for confirmation, as the first combat missions of the new Messerschmitt Me 262 jet fighter were mounted in August 1944 and clearly displayed the technological superiority of this astonishing aircraft. Heavily armed and capable of speeds far in excess of the best Allied fighters, military planners must have been fearful of the devastation these new aircraft could wreak on their bombing offensive and their continued air supremacy. How many of these fighters did the Luftwaffe have and how could they be stopped? Mercilessly hunting the new German jets was now of critical importance to the war effort.

This is an excellent kit with lovely amounts of detail and with a small amount of skill and a little care will make a realistic looking kit. It is the equal if not better than any other 1:72 scale Me.262 currently on the market. I would ignore all the other over critical reviews/comments posted already. Its an inexpensive kit at £13, not 1 at double the price where you could expect more. And I expect other fighter-bomber variants to follow in due course.

Great new tooling

Bought 2 of these bad boys when they were first released in the Swindon Hornby shop! lovely and crisp tooling which I cannot complain about, great way the parts fit together and they go together very well with that! Multi-part canopy is there but no biggie as it fits brilliantly with some care. Okay, there aren't moving or position-able control surfaces, but for a small 1/72 kit, that's no problem and with the amount of after market extras, if you want some resin control surfaces or nose guns, there will be some out there so I can't complain about that! Two nice decal schemes and a nice sized box of plastic! Decals are of Eduard quality which is un-rivaled. 4/5 i think is a very fair rating :) ... Read more

Just received mine and done a dry test fit and everything goes together really well.

Nice panel lines and the engine detail is very good so quite impressed. However for the price it falls short of expectations compared with other options.

There are no positionable parts or any nose/gun details, the gun ports had flash over them and there is no closed canopy option.

In this scale a multi-canopy option never looks realistic when modelled in the closed position and always has a discernible join step (just see the pro-built example on the web site).

Good but not a bench marker or 'must have' I'm afraid and overall a wee bit disappointing given the heady heights that Airfix have achieved with previous releases.... Read more
