| Description

Well-suited for amphibious warfare and the tactical insertion of ground troops, the ‘Commando’ was an important variant of the Sea King. It was initially proposed as a tactical transport for the Egyptian Air Force for which the amphibious capability of earlier Sea Kings was not required and so the side floats were deleted. With folding rotors and tail, the Commando entered service with the Royal Navy as the Sea King HC.4.

It would eventually be provided with radar-warning and infrared jamming devices, and could also deploy M130/M147 flares as countermeasures. Besides troops, it could also be fitted to carry underslung loads of up to 2.5 tonnes. Increased range and a 28-troop capacity made it ideal as an amphibious transport aircraft, and the HC.4 would see operational service in the Falklands, Balkans, Gulf, Lebanon and Afghanistan conflicts. It was often deployed in order to evacuate wounded personnel and refugees, as well as preparing for and supporting ground advances. It is due to be retired from UK forces service in March 2016.

Sea King - an excellent model (but not for novices)

This is a model with a lot of detail and has been well thought out My main comment is that the Level 2 Skill Level isn't really appropriate for this model. I found the external fittings quite fiddly and it's a hard model to get "right" - thus I would recommend it for slightly more experienced modelers. A year later I actually stripped it down to the hull and started again! In summary, an excellent model but not for novices (as I then was)

The Royal Navy Sea King HC 4

This is an excellent kit, the box is full of goodies and you get a lot for your money.

This particular kit an be made 1 of 2 ways.

1) The version where it is 'folded up and parked in the hangar' as you get 2 sets of rotor blades (flight and stowed) the rear part of the helo also folds away and makes a great diorama, this option also allows the open doors for a good look inside.

2) in flight - as they have a method of attaching a model motor (but what a surprise Airfix have stopped selling them - D'oh!) with this option, a suitable stand and the rotors rotating. This is an enjoyable feature - which is sadly let down by 2 things. They (Airfix) dont do the motors any more :( and they (Airfix - again) have not included any crew for the flight option.

having said that - the kit is superb and well worth the money - and is highly recommended.

Another Cracker!

I bought this kit having read the reviews in AMW Magazine, from that moment I knew I wanted to try it. Like another reviewer posted, if it had the rivets, it would have been truly excellent.

You can choose whether to display it folded up or fully extended, the two schemes provided are great, and you can choose whether to open the doors or close them. The ability to motorise it was impressive, as it shows Airfix are keeping their options open for the future.

Despite the lack of exterior detail, the kit was a dream to build, and the interior is complimented not only by benches and seating, but the floor is even detailed. I was surprised there was no aircrew though.

All in all, a great kit, and I can't wait to get hold of the HAR.3 variant.... Read more
