| Description

Discover how a jet engine works by building your very own working model, with spinning turbo fans and a variable speed control.  Built as though hanging beneath a wing the Jet Engine's speed can be controlled by the handle built into the base. Using the simplified instructions, piece together over fifty parts to build an engine with movement, lights and sound.

Airfix Engineer - Under powered Jet Engine

I can honestly say that Airfix have raised their game over the last few years with the standard of plastic kits but this is poor in nearly every regard.

The instructions are clearly for a different version of this kit. Black wires become red in the instructions and do not match the wiring of the actual model. The fit is poor and several items took much force to put into place.

My son and I persevered to the very end and fired up the jet engine. Sadly the blower does not move enough air to turn the blades.
We then took it apart and glued all of the air pipes to minimise any loss. Still the turbines do not turn.

I would return it for a refund but it was a gift.

The only positive that I can find is that it does look like a jet engine and has a clear panel to see the stationary parts.

I suspect Airfix are well aware of the problems and (hopefully) will not allow this item to come back into stock.

Jet Engine a20005-50-126

I really liked this kit albeit simple to intermediate in build. Some of the details in the instruction may be confusing however my advice read ahead to get the grand scheme of what the electronics do in the way of connections. It would be helpful to show an actual wire schematic. The Assembly sequence 10, page 10, Circled A is illustrating only how to pair wires up and use the heat shrink. Not a good example as there is no pairing of red to black. Only: red to red and black to black with heat shrink to protect after twisting wire pairs. I think the instructions were just trying to illustrate how to do the shrink wrap. With that I give this an Outstanding Rating. Great for motivating the youth of today to jet engines. ... Read more

not good

Sadly I was dissapointed with what appears to be an excellent model.
1. The instructions are inadequate. Even with a designer mentality they take some figuring out.
2. I found some of the assembly sequences illogical. It was far easier to assemble some of the casings before tackling the wiring.
3. The wires are too short where they need to be long and are long where they could be shorter. This causes problems when assembling the casings, especially in the throttle area.
4. As an educational toy it fails in the first degree. The completed engine works in the wrong direction. If by any miracle this was a practical engine, the aircraft would be flying tail-fin first. I did try re-engineering the blower but without any real success.
So, Airfix, I think this particular product requires a complete rethink or, at least, an explanation that the model does not work in the same way as a real jet engine so that youngsters don't get the wrong idea.
