Description
The period between the First and Second World Wars was something of a golden era for British aviation and saw the introduction of some of the most attractive aircraft to see RAF service. With their gleaming silver fuselages and bright squadron markings, many of these aircraft also represented the absolute pinnacle of biplane aviation technology. The introduction of the Hawker Hart light bomber proved to be something of an embarrassment for the RAF, as it was faster than the current fighter aircraft in service. The answer to this problem was simple, ask Hawker Aviation to build a fighter version of their Hart. Powered by the mighty Rolls Royce Kestrel engine, the new two seat ‘Hart Fighter’ proved to be a great success and even though it was quickly renamed Demon to differentiate between the two aircraft, just over 300 of these elegant fighters would eventually be produced. Unfortunately, this golden era for biplanes occurred just as the first monoplane designs were being developed and their reign would prove to be a short, if glorious one. Just as the Demon had been introduced to combat a new breed of fast biplane bombers, so the performance of the new Bristol Blenheim would render it obsolete as a fighter almost overnight.

Not a new mould, but certainly still good detail for its age. There is quite a bit of flash to clean off before you start building. The top wing needed tape to hold it in place while the glue set. And cut your tail struts with some sprue attached as 2 of them aren't quite long enough. I also missed adding the instrument panel initially (not in the stage instructions) so it was fiddly to get it on after the pilot was in situ. I was happy with the end result though. Not a kit for the inexperienced.

Surprisingly easy to build well
I've had a bit of an aversion to Biplanes dating back to about 1983 & the Matchbox Gladiator. Recent airfix such as their excellent Swordfish and new tool Gladiator have made them so much easier to assemble but with this kit I was expecting old school difficulties.
Partially my skills have improved but I was amazed how solid this plane became. I hadn't fully appreciated that the upper wing bends down, the lower wing bends up and the outer struts are angled outwards but once you work that out the whole thing locked together really well.
There's a little superficial flash on the wings (Easily cleaned) but apart from that moldings are crisp, part fit really good and decals fragile but very attractive. Its easy to add extra rigging too. The only thing missing is a small windshield for the pilot. Another great value re-issue....

Instructions require updating.
Obviously this is a vintage kit so don't expect modern standards. The instruction sheet has no colour callouts for those items not appearing on the colour artwork; in particular the cockpit interior and crew, these are pretty important for an aircraft with an open cockpit.
