  • Scheme 2: Avia CS-92 Czech AF

As the first operational jet fighter in the world, initial Messerschmitt Me262s combat operations were flown by single seat aircraft, piloted by some of the Luftwaffe’s most experienced airmen. A two seat trainer version soon followed, which allowed new pilots to acquaint themselves with this advanced technology, without their conversion from piston power being their first solo jet flight.

Nice, but ultimately fall short of greatness.

Rather than yet another Lutwaffe 262 I decided on the #2 option of Avia CS-92 serial V-31, only to be disappointed as you cannot build it from the box with the plastic providing only parts for the Night Fighter conversion and not the original Trainer.
The rear cockpit will need modifications, and the cannon troughs blanking off, although pictures show the CS-92 retains the underside ejection chutes openings.
So if you want an accurate Czech bird you have extra work ahead as well as fighting the fit of the engine nacelles - an iaaue common to the single seater boxes.
On a more positive note the external detail, panel lines and mould quality is nice, it is correctly noted that there is a question mark over the exact shade of grey for the colour scheme, and the decal stencils differ between the German/British and Czech options and correctly go beyond merely slapping on different roundels and codes. ... Interesting choice of kit

As with the previous release of the Me262 this all goes together nicely. The canopy looks a little better than the original single seater. The radar antenna is quite delicate for the scale. A PE part would be better (and I hate PE!) But the plastic is ok. I do query the paint scheme though. The real red 12 surrendered to the British (the RAF decal option is a nice touch) and original photos exist. Airfix claim dark BROWN spots over lightblue. Really??? I'm doing Gray-violet spots over light gray. The brown and green wings are in disagreement with other sources too but the black and white photographs allow a lot of artistic licence. Next time release the 262 prototype with 50mm gun!

Humbrol Enamel paints for the kit's primary decal scheme.
