As the battle hardened Bf109 fighter pilots of the Luftwaffe began operations against Britain following the Dunkirk evacuation, they would be at a disadvantage for the first time. With only enough fuel for limited time over England, any mechanical issue or damage during combat would result in their capture at best, but certainly an end to their war.

The diminutive Messerschmitt Bf 109 has to be regarded as one of the most famous fighter aircraft in the history of warfare and one which was flown by more of the world’s most successful air aces than any other aircraft type. Indeed, its name is often used in common parlance to describe any aircraft which carried the infamous national insignia of the Luftwaffe during WWII – if it had a black cross, then it was probably a Messerschmitt.

Bf109 and its variants

I would highly recommend this kit, particularly if you are new (or returning) to the hobby. The fit of the parts is excellent with minimal filler required. The parts count is high enough to make a good replica without having to spend years on it. A wide variety of schemes are available. I enjoyed building the German one so much that I have now built the captured RAF and the version evaluated by the Japanese. The engine cover was reluctant to fit but not a major issue. This model has really helped me get back into the hobby. Well done Airfix!
