NEW TOOLING

Britain’s most pressing need was for aircraft and in 1940, the British Purchasing Commission approached US aircraft manufacturer North American Aviation, to produce licence-built Curtiss P-40 fighters for the RAF. Slightly indignant at the prospect, North American officials proposed to build a totally new aircraft for the Royal Air Force, which would be superior to the P-40 and more suitable for their needs. So impressive was their pitch, the British agreed to their proposal and signed a contract for the new aircraft. Unfortunately, time was very much against the North American design team, as Britain desperately needed aircraft without delay. Work on the new project began immediately.

What North American Aviation achieved with their new aircraft design was nothing short of astonishing. Incorporating highly advanced new features and the very latest manufacturing techniques, the prototype aircraft (NA-73X) rolled out of their hangar on 9th September 1940, only 120 days after the contract had been signed. The first flight of the aircraft took place just 47 days later and other than the usual issues associated with a first flight, the aircraft showed great promise and was a clear vindication of the confidence North American Aviation had in their design capabilities. Arguably the most effective Allied fighter aircraft of the Second World War, the Mustang was the mount of aces and enabled USAAF units to protect their mighty bomber streams all the way to their targets deep into Germany and back home again. In this larger scale, you really do get a better appreciation of the size and power of this magnificent fighting aeroplane.

Nice Detail

This is only the fourth Airfix kit that I have done. All have been very satisfying and the P-51 was no exception. I display my aircraft hanging with the wheels up. So naturally the only problem I had was with the fit of the LG doors. This kit comes with all the parts for wheels up but the instructions do not tell you that you need to clean up lots of material in the belly of the airplane to get a flush fit of the parts. Still turned out fine though. All of the other parts fit very well. Great plastic formula to work with. A little "greasy" and needed a good coat of primer to get the paint to stick.(lesson learned!) I wasn't a bog fan of the decal sheet so used aftermarket to get what I wanted. One of the nicer models I've finished so I Went out and bought the Hurricane to do next!... Read more

North American P-51D Mustang, Kit A05131

Great Kit, Loved every minute of the Build. Wheel bays and Cockpit were excellent. I built it straight out of the box. I had no fix issues what so ever. Some of the sprues are thick and some very heavy, be careful you don't take away some of the plastic from the parts on the heavy parts of the sprue. Otherwise a fantastic kit 10/10

P-51D 1/48 scale

I am about half way through the build of this kit. So far I really like it. However my kit had irreparable flaws in all three of the sliding portion of the canopies. Each had a fogged area that was embedded within the clear part and could not be fixed. I contacted Airfix about this today so I expect a few days for a reply. The cockpit is great, probably the highlight of the kit. It far surpasses Tamiya and Hasegawa kits. The overall fit is ok, some filling is required. The clear parts other than what I mentioned above are crystal clear. Some work had to be done around the machine gun inserts, they are not a good fit. The wheel wells are the best around. You must take care when removing the parts from the sprues. The plastic is very soft and the sprue gate to the part will leave a divit in the part if you are not careful when removing the part. Trim carefully and dry fit everything before gluing. I would suggest to Airfix that they allow photos to be uploaded to the reviews... Read more
