| Description

The Tiger I was produced from late 1942 as an answer to the formidable Soviet armour encountered in the initial months of Operation Barbarossa.  The Tiger I design gave the Wehrmacht its first tank mounting the 88mm gun.  During the course of the war, the Tiger I saw combat on all German battlefronts.

Better than its reputation

This kit has long been regarded as famously inaccurate. Having recently bought four of them, I searched online for some reference material, and found online some Squadron/Signal scale plans which I resized to print out at 1/76. I have now compared the Airfix kit to these plans - and the kit scales out accurately to 1:76.

It is sometimes said that it's missing the outer row of road wheels. This is not true; late model Tigers had a revised wheel design that enabled the deletion of those wheels. I had also read that the tank is on narrow transport tracks, but my sources say these were 520mm wide while combat tracks were 720mm wide. The kit's tracks come out at just under 10mm wide, i.e. they are spot on.

Negatives: well, the turret box, air cleaners, exhaust shrouds, mudguards, towing cables, and crew tools are all missing. So there is work to do, but dimensionally this is an accurate late Tiger I.

Of its time

This kit was tooled in the early 1960s and it shows. Although basically OK it suffers from acres of flat surfaces and the key hull assembly is all butt joints (for 3 pieces). The other bugbear are the vinyl tracks which sit indifferently. It builds into an acceptable model for wargaming but may be a little undersize. Looks OK but really needs the modern treatment and a new way of doing the tracks.
