| Description

The rugged and reliable Hawker Hurricane was arguably the most important fighter aircraft available to the Royal Air Force at the beginning of WWII.  Easier to produce and more forgiving to fly than the more glamorous Spitfire, the Hurricane was available in much greater numbers than any other fighter at the time of the Battle of Britain and proved decisive in securing eventual victory for the pilots of the RAF.

Early RAF operations in the Mediterranean and North Africa saw small numbers of Hurricane Mk.I fighters pitted against vastly superior numbers of Regia Aeronautica aircraft.  They proved to be more than a match for anything the Italian Air Force could hurl at them, but the arrival of battle hardened Luftwaffe fighters in 1941 saw a change in fortunes.  Many of the Hurricanes were ‘Tropicalised’ and arrived in theatre with the chin mounted Vokes carburettor dust filter, which significantly altered the profile of the Hawker fighter.

The scheme on this new Hurricane has to be one of the most attractive on any RAF fighter.

Really different Hurricane with online help

This was a joy to build, from beginning to end. The cockpit is amazing and is very similar in construction to the 1:24 Hurricane (only this one is a better fit), although you don't see much of it when built. The decals look a little daunting on the tropical version but they behaved perfectly. Humbrol have produced a step by step guide to this build by Geoff Coughlin and loaded it onto YouTube. This is a great idea and Airfix should signpost it from this page. Follow it, and you cannot fail to get a reasonable result. Well conceived and great value.

A Nice Kit Overall

Great kit overall, having built some of Airfix's other "New Tool" kits, this one had a few bumps in the road of construction.
The cockpit is amazing. The execution is top notch. The cutting of the forward part of the lower wing to allow for tropical filter fitment went extremely smooth, well engineered in my view. The fit of the upper wings to the lower wing assembly was good overall save for the trailing edge of the wing being rather thick. Some sanding, it was good to go. Position-able control surfaces were a super cool feature to work with.
Where it all went off track was the mating of the lower wing/cockpit assembly to the fuselage. The forward section of the wing to fuselage fit was rough at best needing considerable sanding to set right and then filled with putty. The radiator assembly needed considerable work to make fit properly as well. The closed canopy had swirls throughout and should not have passed quality check. Decals were great, best yet. A nice kit overall.

HH MK1 Tropical

very nice kit with the only weak (literally) point being the cockpit. the mating surfaces are too small but all in all it is a very nice kit. i like the fact that you could have the gun bays open but a bit disappointing that there was no engine included. the primary scheme it also a nice change to the standard coulours for desert version the decals also behaved realy well even without setting solutions. well done airfix
