The first production Spitfire Mk.I was delivered to RAF No.19 Squadron at Duxford on 4th August 1938 and heralded the arrival of a future aviation icon. The Spitfire was a true aviation thoroughbred, possessing striking good looks, yet devastatingly effective in combat. During the aerial duels of the Battle of Britain, its combination of speed, agility and firepower enabled it to take on the feared fighter units of the Luftwaffe, allowing the slightly slower and less agile Hurricane to take a heavy toll of their attacking bomber force.

This is the 2nd Airfix 1/72 Spitfire 1a I have built since returning to modelling just over a year ago - cockpit detail is much improved over the earlier Mk1a I built recently
I tool the time to score and move the control surfaces to animate the model and used an airbrush with Humbrol Maskol to put the main 3 colours on.
I used Humbrol 26 Khaki because No 29 Dark Earth looked too dark in this scale and did not have enough contrast against the Humbrol 30 Dark Green
I am very pleased with the results - good detail overall, the cockpit looks good through the canopy and the panel lines are distinct enough to see with a gentle touch of shadowing.
Slight trim needed at the rear fuselage behind the pilots seat to allow the canopy to drop into place and sit correctly - perhaps 1/4 mm or so.
Apart from that everything went together just right - and it LOOKS like a proper mk1 Spit with it's snub nose & 8 x gun ports
Well done Airfix - a very satisfying build ...
